Chargeback Recovery Services

Dispute Resolution ~3 min read The Fraud Practice Library

Chargeback recovery — also called chargeback revenue recovery or representment services — is the business of disputing chargebacks on a merchant's behalf and reclaiming funds that would otherwise just be written off. Chargebacks exist to protect consumers, but plenty get abused, and the losses add up fast enough that specialized recovery vendors have become their own industry.

What's actually disputable

Legitimate chargebacks come from customer service failures, damaged goods, misrepresented products, or genuine payment processing errors. Fraud-related chargebacks split into two kinds: third-party fraud (someone else's stolen card) and friendly fraud (the actual cardholder disputing a transaction they made, to get a free refund).

What to evaluate in a provider

  • Historical win rate on disputes
  • Fee structure — charged on all disputes filed, or only the ones actually won
  • Experience with your specific card brands and payment types
  • Specific expertise disputing CNP transactions
  • Vertical market specialization matching your business
  • Real capability against friendly fraud specifically
  • Which chargeback reason codes they simply won't take on

Cost and timeline

Providers typically charge a set percentage of the chargeback's value per dispute — commonly 15–25%, though it varies by vendor. The representment process itself usually takes one to three weeks. A win recovers the funds minus the provider's fee; a loss can escalate to arbitration, which carries higher fees and ends in a final card association ruling.
