Advanced Address Verification Plus (AAV+) is an American Express-exclusive service that goes further than standard AVS — instead of checking only the billing address, it examines shipping address, email, and phone number alongside the cardholder's billing details.
What gets submitted
- Cardholder billing details and phone number
- Shipping address and phone number
- Email address and IP address
- Cardholder name exactly as it appears on the card
American Express returns a real-time match/no-match on each field, which helps reduce fraud risk across eCommerce, mail order, and phone order channels alike.
Limitations
It's American Express-only, so merchants without a direct Amex connection need to confirm their gateway actually passes the required fields through. The optional chargeback guarantee covers fraudulent-transaction chargebacks specifically — not customer service disputes.
Getting set up
You'll need AAV+ specifications from American Express and certification of your authorization format and checkout flow. The chargeback guarantee is an optional paid add-on; the email and phone verification components are available through Amex's complimentary electronic verification program.
